NEWS FROM RECENT ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS

BOOM Project

BOOM is one of the UK’s biggest arts and multimedia programmes, launched by CYP in partnership with MTV, and V.  It is a development project that enables young people to learn and put into practice film production and creative media skills that open up volunteering and vocational opportunities. Five NACYP affiliated clubs participated in the 2009 Boom Project; resulting in eleven young people aged from 14 to 24 taking part.  Each club received an Activity Leader Resource Pack containing top of the range equipment, software and technical support. The young participants committed to tangible volunteering actions, each recruiting a further eight young people back in their clubs to work with. This was an excellent opportunity for young people across our clubs to take on a challenge through this media project and an excellent way for them to make a positive contribution to their club and local community.

Pool Competition

The NACYP Pool Competition was a great day, with three young people making it to CYP Regional Event and one young woman making it all the way to the CYP National Event.

Sports & Activity Programme (SAP) Accredited Training

NACYP ran a SAP training course for 16-25 year olds from our affiliated clubs, in partnership with National CYP (funded through Sport England).  A successful turnout of 22 young people participated in a variety of positive practical activities and learnt many new skills.  As well as an increasing knowledge, confidence and understanding of how to plan safe purposeful, fun activities in a youth club setting with an understanding of the basic elements of leadership including; communication skills, group control, organisational skills and safety in sport.  Participants received a SAP Pack, which was used by the young volunteer back in their Club setting.  Each young volunteer also received a sports voucher after they each returned their volunteering diary of delivery of at least 4 SAP pack sessions in their Club setting.  The young volunteers also went on to gain an accredited qualification in Sports Leadership.

Youth Club 5 A-Side Tournament

The event held at JJB Soccer Dome was a huge success attracting 114 young people aged between 11 and 16 from youth clubs across Northumberland, Newcastle and North Tyneside.  Cowgate Boys beat Red Row A, 4 – 2 in the 11 – 13 boys age group final. The 14 – 16 boys age group decider was claimed by CVYP Limited, who defeated Red Row C, 6 – 2.  North Shields East End Stars beat North Shields East End Aces in the 11-13 girls age group showdown. Player of the Tournament and Fair Play Awards were also given for age group.  The Newcastle United Foundation ran various skills competitions during the day, donating NUFC home match tickets as prizes.  Club mascot Monty also made an appearance to hand out trophies and prizes, with every participant receiving a goody bag.  Many thanks go to Metro Radio Cash for Kids because without their generous funding this event would not have been possible.  Most importantly  huge thanks to all the young people for making it a very exciting and enjoyable day.
